Naming

The first few sixth Rangers are more popularly known by their colors only: the Green Ranger (MMPR), the White Ranger (MMPR), the Gold Ranger (Zeo), and the Silver Ranger (In Space). When sixth Rangers began using colors that were previously used in other seasons, the names became more creative. For instance, the Titanium Ranger could not have been called «the Silver Ranger», because Power Rangers in Space already had a Silver Ranger. The Phantom Ranger is also sometimes considered to be a sixth Ranger. Since «the Black Ranger» would seem to refer to MMPR black, he used a more creative moniker. Simple color designations returned in RPM, but the order of the words was reversed (e.g. Ranger Gold and Ranger Silver), which kept the names unique. The Gold Samurai Ranger from Power Rangers Samurai has also been known as the Gold Ranger, but that name is more likely to recall the Gold Zeo Ranger for many fans. In the Spanish dub of Power Rangers Dino Charge, the Gold Ranger is dubbed as «Ranger Oro», like the metallic element from which comes that color.

Notes

  • In a sense of irony, Bridge is considered annoying by everyone except Piggy, who likes the best because he annoys him the least.
  • The S.P.D. Red Ranger was part of the Disney Stars and Motor Cars Parade at Disney MGM/Hollywood Studios.
  • He is the second Ranger to have more than two colors, the first (and only other, at least on-screen) is Tommy Oliver.
    • He is also the second Ranger to have the colors Green and Red, the first is also Tommy Oliver.
    • He is also the second Ranger to have Green as his first Ranger color, with red as his third color, after Tommy Oliver.
    • He is the second to most Ranger colors at three (Green, Blue and Red), appearing in one season with a cameo in Operation Overdrive. Tommy Oliver had the most with four (Green, White, Red, Black), appearing over seven seasons, and cameos in some other seasons.
  • While Bridge was the Green Ranger, his aura sensing produced a green color, but when he was promoted to Red Ranger, his aura sensing produced a red color (as seen in Once a Ranger).
  • Bridge is usually a year older than Sky, but unlike him, Bridge is more childish and comic-relief while Sky is serious and tough.
  • Bridge is also the only Ranger to demonstrate super strength that results from morphing in the episode «A-Bridged», where he managed to pick up and throw a car, though it still took some effort.
  • Although Bridge was promoted to Blue Ranger, he was never seen using the Blue Ranger’s powers on screen.
  • He is the only Ranger to have 3 colors in the same team.
  • Bridge wears gloves to control his genetic ability. In reality, Matt Austin wears the gloves to conceal the tattoos on his hands.
  • It is unknown who or what happened to the Green Ranger position after Sky and Bridge were promoted.
  • Bridge has the same initials as distant Ranger, Billy Cranston.
  • Bridge is the first Green Ranger to be a part of the core team since Trip.
  • Bridge retains the odd and goofy personality of his Sentai counterpart, Senichi Enari.
  • Bridge is now the first Red Ranger since Rocky DeSantos to drive a Zord or Megazord that didn’t come from the Sentai Footage his costume was created from.
  • Bridge shares the same concept of his Super Sentai counterpart Sen of doing a handstand to think.
  • Bridge was originally not supposed be in the anniversary episode “Once a Ranger” on Operation Overdrive. Brandon Jay McLaren was approached to reprise the role of Jack Landors, but declined due the involvement of his ex-girlfriend, Emma Lahana (Dino Thunder’s Kira Ford), and Chris Violette was unavaliable to reprise his role as Sky. As a result, Bridge became the next S.P.D. Red Ranger and took part in the episode.
  •  Bridge is the first Power Ranger  to be jewish which is something he has in common with his actor Matt Austin since Matt is jewish-Canadian.

Portrayal

Bridge is played by Matt Austin. Bridge shares his descent with Matt in that he is Jewish, Matt himself being Jewish-Canadian. Bridge shares a personality trait with his Japanese counterpart, Sen’ichi Enari, DekaGreen, in that he does hand-stands to think better.

He also shares a trait with Marika Reimon, in that he uses gloves to control his powers, although this was used to conceal a tattoo on Matt’s hand.

Matt was not originally going to be in Once A Ranger, as Brandon Jay McLaren, who plays Jack Landors was offered to reprise his role. However, due to a break-up with Dino Thunder’s Emma Lahana, McLaren turned down the offer when told she would also be reprising her role, plus Chris Violette who plays Sky Tate was unavailable at the time, and the storyline was altered to have Bridge become the new S.P.D. Red Ranger.

In the Japanese dub of Power Rangers S.P.D., Bridge is voiced by Yousuke Itou, who played Bridge’s own counterpart Sen-chan/DekaGreen.

Notes

  • During the start of the episode, the Rangers continually jab at themselves with self-referential humor, such as discussing problems they have with morphing (the giant explosions behind them, having to shout «RPM, Get in Gear!») as well as wondering what the purpose of the «big, googly anime eyes» on their Zords really serve, the latter a subtle nod to RPM’s source. In fact, at one point Ranger Blue himself actually uses the explosion from the morph as a weapon.
  • At one point, a little girl asks «Are we going to die?», one of the few explicit references to death in the franchise.
  • Aside from the firefighter flashback, Flynn is shown to be the one in the moral right at each job he attempts. As an officer he attempted to arrest the mayor’s son, regardless of the fact as the man had broken the law. As an International Aid Volunteer, Flynn reveals his fellow workers had not truly helped the natives, and had instead taken advantage of the local plant life to make tennis rackets.
  • This is the first and only episode of RPM in which Venjix does not make an appearance.

Notes

  • This episode kicks off the six-part ‘flashback arc’ during which the backstories of all the Rangers (except for Dillon) and Doctor K are explored.
  • The pizza store Ziggy and Fresno Bob shake down for protection money is Jungle Karma Pizza. Though not the same exact restaurant, it shares its name with the pizza shop in Power Rangers Jungle Fury possibly meaning that Jungle Karma Pizza is a franchise or chain.
  • Ziggy’s arrest is seen as overzealous by fans as the Rangers and Dr. K could vouch Ziggy was blundering with getting his telepirtation to work.
  • The Sonic Sound-Wave Blast Cannon which Ziggy plays with at the beginning, that Dr. K uses to rescue him is a recycled version of the Thunder Stinger from Big Bad Beetleborgs.
  • This episode feature the debut of a new opening title sequence that now features Dillon and Ziggy’s Ranger designations as well as a picture for Doctor K.
  • This is the only occasion in power rangers history where a ranger appears with only his helmet on without the rest of the suit.

Chronological List

  • Thomas «Tommy» Oliver (Jason David Frank) is the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Originally evil because he was hypnotized, he later fought for good until his powers were drained. He later became the Mighty Morphin White Ranger in season 2

A Putty Patroller is the Green Mutant Ranger in the episode Mighty Morphin Mutants.

    .
  • Trey of Triforia (Ted, Tom, and Tim DiFillipo, voiced by Brad Hawkins) and Jason Lee Scott (Austin St. John) are the first and second Gold Zeo Rangers in Power Rangers Zeo.
  • Zhane (Justin Nimmo) is the Silver Space Ranger in Power Rangers in Space.
  • Ryan Mitchell (Rhett Fisher) is the Titanium Ranger in Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue. He is unique in that he has no Sentai counterpart, as Kyukyu Sentai GoGo-V had no Sixth Ranger.
  • Eric Myers (Daniel Southworth) is the Quantum Ranger in Power Rangers Time Force.
  • Merrick Baliton (Phillip Andrew) is the Lunar Wolf Ranger in Power Rangers Wild Force.
  • Cameron Watanabe (Jason Chan) is the Green Samurai Ranger in Power Rangers Ninja Storm

An evil counterpart of Cam existed in an alternate dimension in which the Ninja Storm Rangers were evil. However, there were only five Rangers in this team as Tori had no counterpart. The Wild Wipeout

    .
  • Trent Fernandez-Mercer (Jeffrey Parazzo) is the White Dino Ranger in Power Rangers Dino Thunder. Though technically the fifth member of his team, his Super Sentai counterpart is officially a sixth Ranger.
  • Sam (voiced by Brett Stewart) is the S.P.D. Omega Ranger in Power Rangers S.P.D. Anubis Cruger, the S.P.D. Shadow Ranger, was the first to appear, but the Omega Ranger fits the role of the sixth Ranger more.
  • Daggeron (John Tui) is the Solaris Knight in Power Rangers Mystic Force. The White Mystic Ranger was the first to appear, although her powers were taken away temporarily, causing the Solaris Knight to fit the role of sixth Ranger more.
  • Tyzonn (Dwayne Cameron) is the Mercury Overdrive Ranger in Power Rangers Operation Overdrive.
  • Gem (Mike Ginn) and Gemma (Li Ming Hu) are respectively the Ranger Operator Series Gold (Ranger Gold) and the Ranger Operator Series Silver (Ranger Silver) in Power Rangers RPM. They are both Sixth Rangers as they are a duo.
  • Antonio Garcia (Steven Skyler) is the Gold Samurai Ranger in Power Rangers Samurai and Super Samurai.
  • Robo Knight (voiced by Chris Auer) is a robotic guardian that aids the Mega Rangers in Power Rangers Megaforce. Succeeded by Orion, see below.
  • Orion (Cameron Jebo) is Super Megaforce Silver in Power Rangers Super Megaforce. Acting as a sixth ranger replacement and successor of the supposed deceased, Robo Knight.
  • Sir Ivan of Zandar (Davi Santos) is the Dino Charge Gold Ranger in Power Rangers Dino Charge and Dino Super Charge.
  • Levi Weston (Jordi Webber) is Ninja Steel Gold in Power Rangers Ninja Steel and Super Ninja Steel.
  • Nate Silva (Abraham Rodriguez) and Steel (voiced by Jamie Linehan) are respectively the Beast Morphers Gold and Beast Morphers Silver in Power Rangers Beast Morphers. They are both Sixth Rangers as they are a duo.

Elements of a Power Rangers season

In each incarnation of the Power Rangers seasons, there are generally people outside the Power Rangers aiding their cause. Among them is a mentor or teacher figure to help lead the Power Rangers, Zordon for example, as well as a technical wizard or magician who designs the various tools used by the Power Rangers; William «Billy» Cranston is perhaps the best example of the latter. There are also characters who have tools and powers like the Rangers but are not Rangers themselves (Ninjor, etc.) Characters for comic relief are generally also present, with such characters attempting to discover the identities of the Power Rangers (Bulk and Skull, for instance), and nearly succeeding on several occasions.

The Rangers themselves are often color-coded, with each Ranger wearing their designated color even when unmorphed. In some such shows as Lightspeed Rescue, Wild Force, and S.P.D., a jacket is given to the Power Rangers to distinguish them from non-Ranger characters. Typically, the Original 7 colors (Red-Yellow-Blue-Pink-Black-Green-White) and the 2 Additional colors (Gold and Silver) are the colors used. In series where new Power Rangers are introduced, they either utilize one of the not-yet-utilized previously mentioned colors, or they do not follow the color-naming conventions at all; an example is the Lunar Wolf Ranger in Wild Force. The Red Ranger is usually the leader of the team, except in the second and third seasons of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers, Time Force, and, arguably, S.P.D.

Each team of Power Rangers, with few exceptions, obey a general set of conventions, outlined at the beginning of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and implied throughout many of the other incarnations, although not stated explicitly. These include the Power Rangers being forbidden to use their Ranger powers for personal gain or for escalating a fight, explaining why the Rangers do not simply step on the small monsters with their Megazord. The Power Rangers are also forbidden to disclose their identities to the general public, barring extenuating circumstances. (This rule was disregarded, however, in Lightspeed Rescue, S.P.D., the final installment of Mystic Force, Operation Overdrive, and RPM). The penalty for violations of these rules, at least in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, would be the loss of «the protection of the power.»

The arsenal available to the Power Rangers is also somewhat standardized: each Ranger is generally armed with a weapon such as a laser gun or a sword. Each Ranger also has a secondary set of weapons, that can often combine to form a larger weapon (usually a cannon). As the series progresses, one or even all of the Rangers are also usually given a motorcycle for long-distance travel, as well as individual zords. In many series, a Ranger is also given additional zords or weapons, in some cases one Ranger may receive something that other Rangers may not have — an example of this is the Battlizer given to the Red Rangers (up until the 19th season) of each series since In Space; but this has stopped at Jungle Fury and restarted recently in Super Samurai. Although much of the arsenal can also be found in Super Sentai, there are generally at least some items that are not generally added for the express purpose of marketing toys designed and sold by Bandai.

In later incarnations, it is also common for each incarnation to be separate, story-wise, from another incarnation. A tradition in later incarnations is for two teams of Power Rangers to team up and take on a villain. In Wild Force, the tenth incarnation of Power Rangers, this is taken to the next level, as ten Red Rangers teamed up in the episode «Forever Red». The only seasons not to feature this are Mighty Morphin, Turbo, Ninja Storm, Mystic Force, Jungle Fury, RPM, and Dino Charge.

Motion Pictures

The Power Rangers series have also brought forth three movies.

  • Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie

The Rangers fight off against Ivan Ooze and his Oozemen and Tengus (later to be called Tengas in the series), and get new Ninja Powers. Although it has the same cast as seasons 2 and 3, it is non-canon because it is set in a seperate timeline from the main universe. However, the idea of the Ninja FalconMegazord came from Ninja Sentai Kakuranger which was adapted into Season 3 soon after the Movie premiered..

    (1995)
  • Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie

This movie provides the series premiere to Power Rangers Turbo. Lerigot from Liaria flees to Earth from the Piranhatrons, and 12-year-old Justin Stewart steps in as the new Blue Ranger. Zordon gives the rangers new Turbo powers. This is the only (commercially released) movie to be canonical to the TV series since it acted as the catalyst for the TV series’ plot.

    (1997)
  • Power Rangers Samurai: Clash of the Red Rangers — The Movie

This movie occurs sometime during Power Rangers Super Samurai (apparently between The Rescue but after Ancient History) and acts as the team-up movie between the Samurai Rangers and Power Rangers RPM. The plot involved Scott Truman teaming up with the Samurai Rangers to stop the evil Professor Cog and a Mooger army led by General Gut. Although this didn’t originally appear to be canonical, the episode «In The Driver’s Seat» featured Professor Cog returning and fighting the Megaforce Rangers so this is the 2nd and final to date movie to be canonical to the series (although this was a made-for-TV special).

  • Power Rangers (2017) This rendition of Power Rangers was released in March 24th 2017 and is a reboot of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

A movie was planned to be produced for Power Rangers: Time Force in 2001, but the threat of a Screen Actors Guild strike cancelled those plans.

Following their re-acquisition of the Power Rangers franchise, Saban announced plans to make a new theatrical Power Rangers movie. It was announced on the Power Rangers website that Lionsgate, working with Saban, would make a rebooted movie based on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, to be released on July 22, 2016. On April 30, the film’s release was moved back six months to January 13, 2017, and then again to its final release date of March 24, 2017.

Hasbro has said they will do a follow up to the 2017 movie.

From 1995 to 1997, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie & Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie grossed $76 million worldwide altogether. MMPR:TM grossed $66,433,194, while T:APRM grossed only $9,615,840 and was considered a flop (though it won back the rest of its budget when it was released on video, and it’s even more of a hit in the UK). As for the reboot film, it has grossed $142.3 million worldwide, supassing the previous 2 films, making the film series grossed $218.3 million worldwide.

Production History

Power Rangers S.P.D. was a milestone series behind-the-scenes and for the fanbase, but also one of the most controversial among fans.

After two years on the series, Doug Sloan and Ann Austen departed as the primary writers and producers of PR, paving the way forward for Greg Aronowitz and Bruce Kalish to take over, with Jackie Marchand staying on as a writer. Joining Kalish were several of his colleagues from Hollywood, including David Garber. Kalish’s resume includes shows such as Mork and Mindy, The Incredible Hulk and The Fall Guy.

Kalish and Aronowitz’s combined effort on the early portions of SPD gained instantaneous praise from the fanbase, as SPD proved to be one of the more ambitious PR shows ever attempted, with a rare cast of strong actors portraying each character with gravitas and investment, as a result, the cast became hailed as perhaps one of the best in the show’s history. It was also at this time that the production crew opened communications with the fandom, which Sloan had previously done, enabling fans to conduct interviews and have conversations with the cast and the producers.

Even the first set of episodes were superb due to the quality backstage talent. After the two-part opener, each Ranger got an entire episode devoted entirely to their character development (episode 3 was Jack’s, episode 4 was for Sky, 5 for Syd, 6 for Bridge, and 7 and 8, which were a single, two-part episode, for Z). Sam, although still a child, entered the show with a very well-received two-part episode (which he shared the spotlight with Z), and the Shadow Ranger was introduced, once again, through a very well-received two-part episode.

As the series continued, it became obvious S.P.D was struggling with its own status quo and storylines, as more filler episodes translated storylines from Dekaranger to push the series towards a conclusion (including the episode Samurai which is set in Japan). A brief reprieve for this complacent writing came when Jackie Marchand’s two-part storyline «Reflection» resolved Sky’s struggle with his personal demons, but it wouldn’t last. By the time the Dino Thunder/S.P.D crossovers «History» and «Wormhole» aired, the latter was crucified for not being able to properly accommodate Jason David Frank, as he was back in the States.

The interaction with the cast and crew gradually minimized as Kalish later admitted his own children had browsed Rangerboard and were horrified by the crass, derogatory criticism and humorous anecdotes made about him. In a second interview, Kalish defended his dependence on Sentai material, insisting his crew were simply «paid to translate, not tell original stories.»

Notes

  • He is the first non-human Blue Ranger since Cestro of the Aquitian Rangers.
  • Like the other A-Squad Rangers, he is to date the only Blue Ranger to willingly turn evil.
  • Greg Aronowitz, for his part, supposedly referred to Blue as “The Warrus” while sculpting him.
  • The Power Ranger helmets for A-Squad were based off the suits for Power Rangers in Space.
  • This Ranger was given the name ‘Beevor’ by a rangerboard fan ‘Merlin’. Supposedly, the name is accepted in general fandom.
    • In Power Rangers HyperForce, Malika Lim planned to establish the fan-names as canon, but did not get the chance to do so.
    • He is the only A-Squad Ranger to be an alien.
  • During the fight between Sky and the A-Squad Blue Ranger, the A-Squad Blue Ranger never grunts, screams, laughs, or speaks at all. However Nick Kemplen was credited as voice of A-Squad Blue Ranger.

Personality

An eccentric, but intelligent young man, Bridge’s unusual mannerisms lead others to see him as annoying. His favorite food is buttery toast. Bridge is inquisitive almost to a fault, and has a tendency to draw out his sentences to the point of near ridiculousness (in the second episode, Syd foreshadowed this trait in a form of meta-humor by asking Bridge «Is it going to be one of those long, drawn out, Bridge type questions, that really isn’t a question, but leaves us asking lots of questions?»). While quirky and prone to thinking in ways others find strange, Bridge is also incredibly analytical; he has the ability to notice small details others would normally overlook, and make accurate, insightful deductions based on this obscure evidence.
